Oakton Masters Rowing Club placed first in their event at the Wye Island Regatta last Saturday. Four women and four men rowed the half marathon course around Wye Island to carry home the first place medal in the Masters 50 Mixed 8+ event. One OMRC veteran cox helped lead the crew to victory, masterfully navigating 18 turns during the 13.1 mile course. Her attention to detail and strategic decisions, coupled with the crew’s consistent, powerful strokes, led the team to victory. The race is 4 times the length of the typical head race but all rowers agreed that time passed quickly: “Before we knew it, we were done” commented one rower. The regatta is unique in that it fields all forms of rowing from the traditional sweep rowing and sculling to Stand-Up Paddling (SUP), kayaking, outrigger canoeing and even a rowboat. This was the first half marathon regatta for OMRC rowers. They plan to return next year to defend their title and field more boats. The Wye Island Regatta is sponsored by the Annapolis Rowing Club.
