OMRC Takes Home Two More First Place Finishes!

On a warm day on our home turf, the OMRC Women’s 4+ and Mixed 4+ entries took first place at the Occoquan Masters Sprints on the Occoquan Reservoir. The OMRC Mixed 4+ included Shafer Dobry, Bo Lee, Tom Bennett, and Adam Schmidt, and was coxed by Susan Graziano Glomb. The OMRC Women’s 4+, with Shafer Dobry, Bo Lee, Wendy Smith, and Karin Udler, and coxed by Susan Graziano Glomb, was also first to cross the finish line.

The Men’s 4+ rowed a competitive race after a great start. It was the first time in a 4+ for Richard Smith since 1979! It also marked his racing debut with OMRC. The OMRC Men’s 8+, Women’s 8+, and Mixed 8+ all rowed hard in their events as well. Karin and Bert Udler won bragging rights over Michael and Charlotte Dobry in the Parent/Child doubles event.

This regatta marked the first time the new starting dock was used on the Occoquan sprint course. Thanks to OBC for hosting the event! A special thanks to Maile for helping out all day with the timing of the races.

OMRC Mixed 4+ takes first at 2015 VBC Masters Sprints!

On June 20th, Michael Dobry, Tom Bennett, Sara Burlein, Shafer Dobry, and Charlotte Dobry (cox) won the Mixed 4+ (D-F) event at the Virginia Boat Club Masters Sprint Regatta by several boat lengths! It was the first sprint race for Sara and the first race that included three Dobrys.

The OMRC Men’s 4+, Women’s 4+, and Men’s 8+ entries all rowed well in their respective events. Jim Norton competed in his first-ever rowing event – rowing in 4 seat in the Men’s 8. OMRC thanks Nick Bartick for jumping into 7 seat in the Mens’ 8+.

The VBC Master Sprints moved to a new venue this year – Robious Landing Park in Richmond, Virginia. By all accounts, the new venue was a big hit. Robious Landing offers shade, a good view of the finish line, and a short distance to the launch dock. Here are some regatta photos, courtesy of Damian:

Successful Learn To Row Day

OMRC had another successful Learn To Row day on Saturday, June 6th, to coincide with the USRowing National Learn to Row Day. The LTR attendees came off the water with smiles on their faces, and most importantly, dry clothes. A total of 17 novice rowers participated. The participants were provided an overview of OMRC, Sandy Run Regional Park, and equipment. OMRC Head Coach Tom Bennett gave instruction on rowing technique – including a demonstration on a rowing machine. Many thanks to all of the OMRC volunteers for coaching, coxing, launch driving, rowing, and helping on the dock. Some of the participants have expressed interest in rowing again. Here are a few pictures from the event:
